Penny Fuller to Sail Away to London

| photo by Aubrey Reuben | Broadway veteran Penny Fuller will star in a rare London staging of Noel Coward's 1961 Broadway musical Sail Away, which is being revived at the Lilian Baylis Theatre at Sadler's Wells as part of the 18th season of Ian Marshall Fisher's Lost Musicals series.
Sail Away will be presented for seven performances only, Sunday afternoons at 4 PM between June 15 and July 13, with additional evening performances at 7:30 PM July 6 and 13.
The cast will also feature Vivienne Martin, Rupert Young, Stewart Permutt and James Vaughan. Ian Marshall Fisher directs, and Chris Walker is the musical director.
The original production of Sail Away opened in 1961 at Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre, where it ran for 167 performances. It subsequently came to London in 1962 at the Savoy Theatre, where it ran for 252 performances. Both productions were directed by Coward himself and starred Elaine Stritch. It has not been seen in London since its original production.
Fuller was Tony-nominated for her Best Featured Actress for her role in the original 1970 production of Applause, in which she played Eve Harrington to Lauren Bacall's Margo Channing. She was also Tony-nominated for Best Featured Actress in a Play in 2001 for her appearance in The Dinner Party. Other Broadway credits include being the standby Sally Bowles in the original 1966 production of Cabaret, which she subsequently took over, and appearances in Neil Simon's play Barefoot in the Park and the short-lived Richard Rodgers-scored musical Rex in 1976. She is next scheduled to appear on Broadway in October in Horton Foote's Dividing the Estate. Earlier this year she was in Edward Albee's A Delicate Balance in Boston.
