Jane Horrocks stars as Shen Te in a new production of Brecht's The Good Soul of Szechuan, which opens May 14 at the Young Vic in a production directed by Richard Jones (Broadway's Titanic and Six Characters Looking for an Author at the Young Vic). Previews began May 8.

Szechuan features a new translation by David Harrower (Blackbird, currently touring the UK, and the adaptation of Pirandello's Six Characters Looking for an Author that Jones directed at the Young Vic).

Also in the cast are Steven Beard, Linda Dobell, Gareth Farr, John Marquez, Sam O'Mahony-Adams, David Osmond, Susan Porrett, Sophie Russell, Liza Sadovy and Tom Silburn.

This theatrical parable, which asks how good people can stay good in a world of poverty and cruelty, was completed by Brecht in 1943 when he was living as an exile in America. It was last given a major production on the London stage when Fiona Shaw starred in a National Theatre revival in 1989.

Horrocks was most recently seen in the West End in the revival of Alan Ayckbourn's Absurd Person Singular at the Garrick. Other roles include originating the lead role in Jim Cartwright's The Rise and Fall of Little Voice onstage at the National Theatre and in the subsequent film version as well as Mike Leigh's film "Life is Sweet," the voice for "Chicken Run" and the role of Bubbles in the TV series "Absolutely Fabulous."

The limited run ends June 28. For tickets contact the box office at 020 7922 2922 or visit www.youngvic.org.
