Daisey's How Theater Failed America Begins Off-Broadway Run May 16

Following an acclaimed engagement at Joe's Pub, Mike Daisey's How Theater Failed America begins a limited six-week run at Off-Broadway's Barrow Street Theatre May 16.
Extemporaneous monologist Daisey played his final performance at Joe's Pub May 11.
Jean-Michele Gregory directs the Barrow Street run, which plays through June 22. The Off-Broadway engagement is produced by AJ Epstein Presents as An Ethereal Mutt Production. Lighting designer is AJ Epstein.
The monologue, according to press notes, is described as such: "From gorgeous new theatres standing empty as cathedrals, to 'successful' working actors traveling like migrant farmhands, to an arts culture unwilling to speak or listen to its own nation, Daisey takes stock of the dystopian state of theatre in America: a shrinking world with smaller audiences every year. Fearlessly implicating himself and the system he works within, Daisey seeks answers to essential and dangerous questions about the art we're making, the legacy we leave the future, and who it is we believe we're speaking to."
Mike Daisey's monologues include Invincible Summer, Monopoly!, Great Men of Genius, The Ugly American, I Miss the Cold War, Wasting Your Breath and Stories From the Atlantic Night Cafe. His first book was titled "21 Dog Years: A Cubedweller's Tale," and he is currently at work on his second tome, "Great Men of Genius." Show times at Barrow Street are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 PM and Sunday at 7 PM.
Roundtable discussions will follow the Sunday performances. Those scheduled to be part of the talkback sessions include Eric Bogosian, Robert Brustein, James Bundy, Jim Nicola, Richard Nelson, Lisa Kron, Maria Dizzia, Gideon Lester, Maria Goyanes and Paige Evans.
