Caliente! In the Heights Box Office Sizzles Following Tony Noms
By Kenneth Jones
15 May 2008
Following the May 13 announcement that In the Heights had earned 13 Tony Award nominations, the box office for the musical boomed as if someone had won the lottery.
A production spokesperson confirmed the accuracy of a report in Variety that the Washington Heights-set show (in which a main character gets a state lottery windfall) wrapped about $200,000 on Tuesday. That figure was topped on Wednesday.
Producers would not comment further.
Among its nominations are Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Direction, and Best Featured Actor and Featured Actress in a Musical, among others.
Variety also reported that August: Osage County, with seven Tony noms, brought in "around $120,000," a rise of about 30 percent, producer Jeffrey Richards told the trade.
