"I Smell A Tony": Cubby Bernstein Readies 2008 Tony Campaign

By Adam Hetrick
15 May 2008

(from top): Cubby Bernstein has offered sage advice to Duncan Sheik, Julie White and Beth Leavel.

Tony season has arrived – and while In the Heights, Passing Strange, Cry-Baby and Xanadu campaign for the title of Best Musical – every nominee knows there can be only one winner.

Enter Cubby Bernstein.

"Who is Cubby," one might ask? Cubby is "the Tony campaign manager," according to Tony Award-winning composer Duncan Sheik, who appears in several of the videos that have popped up on YouTube and at www.cubbybernstein.com.

Even The New York Times has taken notice of the Tony campaign manager, who stands under five-feet tall and appears to be roughly 13 years of age.

"Small suit, big results" is Cubby's motto, and he claims to have been behind 63 Tony wins for musicals including Sweeney Todd and La Cage aux Folles.

Tony-winning producer Marty Richards makes an appearance in the first episode, and Tony Award-winning actress Beth Leavel credits Cubby for steering her clear of The Blonde in the Thunderbird and opting for the title role in the Tony-winning musical The Drowsy Chaperone. Tony winners Carole Shelley and John Cullum also tout the skills of the small wonder.

Another Tony winner who makes an appearance on Cubby's behalf is Little Dog Laughed star Julie White. If it weren't for Cubby's insistence that she peddle cupcakes to producers in Shubert Alley, White would not have made it to deliver her memorable speech on Tony night. "Producers love cupcakes," says the Tony-winning theatre veteran.

Speaking of Little Dog Laughed, Cubby – who claims playwright and Xanadu librettist Douglas Carter Beane is "Paul Rudnick without the Yale degree" – promises to back Xanadu to Tony victory on June 15.

Could Beane — who penned the book for the Tony-nominated Xanadu — be the man behind the boy? Tony nominee Beane denied that allegation to the Times, joking, "I've never met John Cullum."

Playbill.com will feature an interview with the infamous "Cubby" within the next few days.

Will Cubby Bernstein lead Xanadu to a Tony victory?
