I Love You Because Cast Reunites for Cherry Lane Concert May 19

By Andrew Gans
19 May 2008

The original Off-Broadway cast of I Love You Because reunites May 19 at the Cherry Lane Theatre for a one-night-only concert presentation of that Joshua Salzman-Ryan Cunningham musical.

Farah Alvin, David A. Austin, Courtney Balan, Stephanie D'Abruzzo, Colin Hanlon and Jordan Leeds will all be part of the 8 PM concert. The evening features musical direction by the show's composer, Joshua Salzman, and direction by its librettist/lyricist, Ryan Cunningham.

In a recent statement, reunion concert producer Jennifer Maloney said, "As I Love You Because continues to reach new audiences both nationally and internationally, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to give New Yorkers another chance to experience the fantastic original cast of this charming show."

I Love You Because, according to press notes, follows "Austin Bennet (Colin Hanlon), an uptight greeting card writer whose life is turned upside down when he finds his long-term girlfriend in bed with another man. Forced back out into the treacherous New York dating scene, Austin meets Marcy Fitzwilliams (Farah Alvin), a free-spirited photographer whose spontaneity is matched only by her ability to drive him insane. They are constantly misguided by Austin's brother Jeff (David A. Austin) and Marcy's best friend Diana Bingley (Stephanie D'Abruzzo). Together, they explore the 'rules' and nuances of dating in the big city as they learn how to love someone, not in spite of their differences, but because of them."

I Love You Because opened at the Village Theatre Feb. 14, 2006. The musical played 30 previews and 111 regular before closing May 21, 2006. The original run was produced by Jennifer Maloney, Fred M. Caruso, Robert Cuillo and GFour Productions, in association with Jana Robbins, Sharon Carr and Jeffrey Kent.

The original cast recording is available on the PS Classics label.

The Cherry Lane Theatre is located in Manhattan at 38 Commerce Street. Tickets, priced $20, are available by visiting www.ILoveYouBecauseTheMusical.com.
