Stoppard to Star in Hampstead's On the Rocks in July

By Mark Shenton
19 May 2008

Ed Stoppard

Ed Stoppard, actor son of playwright Tom, will star as D.H. Lawrence in On the Rocks, a new play by Amy Rosenthal, playwright-daughter of actress Maureen Lipman and the late writer Jack Rosenthal.

The production will open at the Hampstead Theatre July 1 (following previews from June 26) for a run through July 26.

The play will also feature Tracy-Ann Oberman as Lawrence's vociferous wife Frieda and Charlotte Emmerson and Nick Caldecott as their close friends Katherine Mansfield and John Middleton Murry, who come to stay with them in a romantic village in Cornwall. Set in the spring of 1916 and based on true events, the play observes how Lawrence's dream of communal living starts unraveling before his eyes.

Ed Stoppard appeared as Henryk in Roman Polanski's film "The Pianist" and in the title role in the BBC drama documentary "Tchaikovsky: Fortune and Tragedy." His stage roles include the title part in Hamlet for English Touring Theatre, Konstantin in The Seagull at Chichester Festival Theatre, Tom Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie at the West End's Apollo Theatre and the U.K. premiere of Wit.

Tracy-Ann Oberman co-wrote Three Sisters on Hope Street, an adaptation of Chekhov's Three Sisters, with Diane Samuels that was seen at Hampstead Theatre earlier this year. Her acting credits include playing Chrissie Watts in the BBC-TV series "EastEnders" and German air hostess Gretchen in the West End run of Boeing-Boeing at the Comedy Theatre.

Charlotte Emmerson has worked extensively at the National Theatre, including appearances in Therese Raquin, The Coast of Utopia, The Good Hope and The Cherry Orchard, as well as in Baby Doll (subsequently transferred to the West End) and The Postman Always Rings Twice (West Yorkshire Playhouse that subsequently transferred to the Playhouse). Nick Caldecott has appeared in She Stoops to Conquer at Southampton's Nuffield Theatre and The Importance of Being Earnest at Derby Playhouse.

Playwright Amy Rosenthal's previous plays include Sitting Pretty, Henna Night, Jerusalem Syndrome and Westminster. She adapted her father's autobiography, "Jack Ronsethal’s Last Act," for BBC Radio 4, and adapted his teleplay "Tortoise" for BBC Radio 4 as well.

The play is directed by Clare Lizzimore, whose production of Tom Fool at Glasgow Citizens' Theatre transferred to the Bush Theatre in March 2007. Last year she worked at the National Theatre as a staff director.
