Turturro to Bring Souls of Naples to Big Screen

| photo by Aubrey Reuben | John Turturro, who appeared in the 2005 Off-Broadway staging of Eduardo De Filippo's Souls of Naples, is penning a screen adaptation of the ghostly farce.
Variety reports that Turturro is at work on his own adaptation of De Filippo's farce that will include a cast of both American and Italian actors. Turturro will direct the English-language film that will begin filming on location in Italy next year, according to producer Domenico Procacci.
This will not be the first time Turturro has performed Souls of Naples in Italy. Following the 2005 Off-Broadway run at The Duke on 42nd Street, Turturro and company played a limited engagement in Naples at the Teatro Mercadante in 2006.
There is no official word as to whether members of the Off-Broadway company will reunite for the film adaptation. The Off-Broadway staging, adapted by Village Voice contributor Michael Feingold, boasted a cast that featured Didi Conn, Aida Turturro, Max Casella and Francesca Vannucci.
The 1946-set Souls of Naples – or Questi Fantasmi in Italian – follows a downtrodden married man, Pasquale, who moves into a rent-free Italian villa with his young wife in tow. Through various accounts from servants and strange incidents, the couple learns there are strings attached and the villa may be haunted.
John Turturro is well known for his screen work in "Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou?," "Barton Fink," "Quiz Show," "The Bronx is Burning," and counts among his theatrical credits the Broadway staging of Yasmina Reza's Life x 3 and his Obie Award-winning performance in Danny and the Deep Blue Sea. Turturro was most recently seen in the BAM staging of Beckett's Endgame with Alvin Epstein, Elaine Stritch and Souls of Naples' Max Casella.
