By Adam Hetrick
09 Jun 2008

Brent Barrett

Dee Hoty, Brent Barrett, Nancy Anderson and Jeff McCarthy are among the Broadway veterans who will be part of the summer season at Massachusetts' Cape Playhouse.

Additional casting has been announced for the Cape Playhouse season that includes productions of Marc Salem's Mind Games, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Leader of the Pack, Born Yesterday and The Devil's Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith.

David Yazbek and Jeffrey Lane's 2005 Tony-nominated musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels will make its regional premiere July 21-Aug. 2. Set for the cast are Broadway leading man Brent Barrett (Grand Hotel), three-time Tony nominee Dee Hoty (City of Angels), Perry Ojeda (Imaginary Friends), Stephanie Youell (Curtains), Heather Parcells (A Chorus Line) and John Scherer (Lovemusik). Complete casting will be announced shortly. Mark Martino will stage the production that features choreography by Denis Jones, who assisted Jerry Mitchell and served as associate choreographer for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels on Broadway. Musical direction is by Phil Reno with set design by Dan Kuchar.

Elliot Norton Award winner Bridget Beirne (Parade, The Wild Party) and Laiona Michelle (Black Nativity) head the cast of the doo-wop musical Leader of the Pack, which runs Aug. 4-16. Martino directs the revue that incorporates such songs as "Be My Baby," "Da Doo Ron Ron," "Chapel of Love," "Then He Kissed Me" and the title song. The creative team includes musical director Matt Castle, set designer David Esler and costume designer Gail Baldoni.

The cast for Garson Kanin's comedy Born Yesterday – running Aug. 18-30 – will include Jeff McCarthy (Side Show, Urinetown), Nancy Anderson (Wonderful Town) and Ross Bickell (Noises Off). Pamela Hunt will stage the 1940's comedy that follows "a crude tycoon who brings his showgirl-mistress to Washington D.C. where he hopes to 'buy' a few congressmen with her charms," according to press notes. Set design is by Richard Chambers.

Miche Braden will appear as Bessie Smith in Angelo Parra's The Devil's Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith, Sept. 1-13. Joe Brancato directs the biographical production that includes set design by Yoshi Yakimoto and costumes by Gail Cooper Hecht.

As previously announced, the Cape Playhouse season gets underway with Marc Salem's Mind Games, June 23-July 5.

Following will be A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine – running July 7-19. The cast comprises Jeffry Denman, Michael McGrath, Jonathan Brody, Matt Castle, Susan Cella, Erin Crouch, Michelle Dyer, Ellyn Marie Marsh and Jonathan Richard Sandler.

The Cape Playhouse is located in Dennis, MA, at 820 Route 6A. For tickets and more information call (508) 385-3911 or visit www.capeplayhouse.com.
