Garner, Hamilton and Maher to Star in Bogosian's 1+1 at the Powerhouse

By Andrew Gans
17 Jun 2008

Kelli Garner

Casting has been announced for the upcoming production of Eric Bogosian's 1+1 at the Powerhouse Theater, which is located on the grounds of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY.

The New York Stage and Film Company/Vassar production — which kicks off the 24th Powerhouse Theater season — will be directed by Mark Brokaw and will play the New York venue July 1-13.

The cast will feature Kelli Garner ("Lars and the Real Girl," "The Aviator"), Josh Hamilton (The Coast of Utopia, Hurlyburly) and Matthew Maher (Obie winner for The Race of the Ark Tattoo).

1+1, according to press notes, "explores themes of desire and greed, debating one's responsibility to others, through the lives of a waitress aspiring to be an actress (Brianne), an assistant restaurant manager (Carl), and a photographer (Phil)."

About the characters in his new play, Bogosian said in a statement, "Bri, Phil, and Carl are based on people I've found intensely interesting my whole life: a good-looking hustler, an ambitious pretty girl, and a 'good guy' who always seems to finish last. . . . The story is a parable. All my plays are. My plays are not expositions of a specific time and place. Rather, I try to find a way to set them so that the audience can immerse itself in a situation. I don't have answers. I have questions."

The play, according to Powerhouse, is "recommended for mature audiences only. Contains strong language and adult situations."

Tickets, priced $35, are available by visiting http://powerhouse.vassar.edu or by calling (845) 437-5599 or (845) 437-7235.
