Broadway's Spring Awakening Offers Online Rush Tickets

By Adam Hetrick
17 Jun 2008

The Broadway production of Spring Awakening has launched a new digital ticket rush offer on the official webpage of the Tony Award-winning musical.

Theatregoers no longer have to wait in line outside the Eugene O'Neill Theatre to score rush tickets to the coming-of-age rock musical by Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik. Producers are now offering a limited amount of $40 orchestra and front-mezzanine tickets to the general public through the Spring Awakening digital lottery.

Those interested can visit SpringAwakening.com and enter their name, phone number and e-mail into the lottery system between 12 AM and 3 PM on the day they wish to see Spring Awakening. Participants will then receive a text message on their cell phone confirming their successful entry into the lottery.

Lottery winners will receive a text message with a winning ticket code by 4 PM, which they then enter into a special section of the official website between the hours of 4-6 PM. Winners must purchase their $40 rush tickets online, which will be held for them at the Eugene O'Neill box office.

The digital rush is not available for matinee performances. For Spring Awakening's 7 PM Tuesday performances, the digital rush begins one hour earlier.

Spring Awakening isn't the only production to offer ticketing via a digital lottery. The Public Theater has also launched its first online ticket distribution lottery for Shakespeare in the Park productions, replacing the in-person queue on Lafayette Street.

Based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening won eight 2007 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Spring Awakening features direction by Michael Mayer, choreography by Bill T. Jones, book and lyrics by Steven Sater and a score by Duncan Sheik.

Songs featured in the Tony-winning score are "All That's Known," "And Then There Were None," "Blue Wind/Don't Do Sadness," "Left Behind," "Mamma Who Bore Me," "My Junk, "The Bitch of Living," "The Dark I Know Well," "The Guilty Ones," "The Song of Purple Summer," "The Word of Your Body," "Those You've Known," "Totally Fucked," "Touch Me," "Whispering" and "The Mirror-Blue Night."

The musical made its world premiere Off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company in June 2006. Spring Awakening transferred to Broadway the following November, where it continues to play at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre.

The Broadway production of Spring Awakening currently stars Kyle Riabko (Melchior), Alexandra Socha (Wendla), Blake Bashoff (Moritz), Skylar Astin (Georg), Lilli Cooper (Martha), Blake Daniel (Ernst), Brian Charles Johnson (Otto), Emma Hunton (Ilse), Phoebe Strole (Anna), Matt Doyle (Hanschen), Remy Zaken (Thea), Christine Estabrook (Adult Women), Glenn Fleshler (Adult Men), Gerard Canonico, Alice Lee, Eryn Murman and Matt Shingledecker.
