Thompson's Middle East Drama Palace of the End Opens June 23

By Adam Hetrick
and Andrew Gans
23 Jun 2008

The Epic Theatre Ensemble production of Judith Thompson's Palace of the End officially opens at the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre at Playwrights Horizons June 23.

Daniella Topol directs the 2008 Blackburn Prize winning trio of monologues that has also been nominated as Outstanding New Play by Toronto's Dora Mavor Moore Awards. Palace of the End began previews June 11.

The three-person cast features Teri Lamm (Hannah and Martin), Heather Raffo (9 Parts of Desire) and Rocco Sisto (Amadeus, A Month in the Country).

Palace of the End, according to Epic notes, is an "incendiary and haunting triptych of monologues that intimately explores the experiences of three key figures of the Middle East crisis: Lynndie England (Lamm), the U.S. soldier who was convicted of abusing detainees at Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison; David Kelly (Sisto), the British weapons inspector who allegedly committed suicide after being involved in a government scandal and Nehrjas Al Saffarh (Raffo), a member of the Communist Party of Iraq who suffered under Saddham Hussein's regime and died when the Americans bombed her home during the initial Gulf War."

Palace of the End has scenic design by Mimi Lien, lighting design by Justin Townsend, costume design by Theresa Squire, sound design by Ron Russell, projection design by Leah Gelpe and original music by Katie Down.

Tickets, priced $50, are available by calling (212) 279-4200 or by visiting www.ticketcentral.com. The Peter Jay Sharp Theatre is located in Manhattan at 416 West 42nd Street.
