Poet Giovanni Will Appear With Broadway's Jenkins and Composer Rosen for NYC Reading

By Kenneth Jones

Acclaimed poet and author Nikki Giovanni will fly to New York City from her home in Virginia to join Broadway vocalist Capathia Jenkins and songwriter-performer Louis Rosen for a reading event of Giovanni's work, and two performance/signings of the new PS Classics CD, "One Ounce of Truth: The Nikki Giovanni Songs."

Giovanni will read her own work prior to performances by Jenkins and Rosen, who interpret Giovanni's poems with music.

The trio will make a special appearance at the Community Bookstore in Brooklyn on July 8 at 7 PM. The Community Bookstore is located at 143 7th Avenue, between Carroll & Garfield in Park Slope. Call (718) 783-3075 for more information.

On July 9 at 6 PM they will come to Barnes & Noble Lincoln Center at 1972 Broadway at 66th Street. Call (212) 799-2500 for more information.

Both events will have a reading by Giovanni, plus a performance of selections from the new disc, followed by a signing.

Later this month, Jenkins and Rosen will perform three shows based on the CD at the Iridium Jazz Club (1650 Broadway at 51st Street) on three Tuesdays — July 15, 29 and Aug. 5, at 7 PM. All shows have a $20 cover and a $10 minimum. Doors open at 6 PM and a full dinner menu is available. Call (212) 582-2121 for reservations.

The CD "One Ounce of Truth" "combines the sultry and soaring voice of Capathia Jenkins with the inspired melodies and arrangements of composer Louis Rosen into a fresh and enthralling 13-song mix of jazz, blues, soul, classic pop and American roots music," according to PS Classics. "Jenkins' powerful and sensitive performances blend with Rosen's music — alternately delicate and exultant, and always highly melodic — in exploring those most universal of human experiences: friendship, lust, love and loss. It's a lush and memorable collection based on the vivid words of Nikki Giovanni, the renowned American writer and poet recently chosen as one of Oprah Winfrey's 'Living Legends.'"

The Iridium gig will feature Rosen on acoustic guitar leading an all-star band, which includes Kimberly Grigsby on piano, Dave Phillips on bass, Andrew Sterman on flutes and saxophones, Rob Moose on jazz violin and electric guitar, and Erik Charlston on drums and percussion. Jenkins and Rosen previewed the album in two African concerts at the Harare International Festival of the Arts in Zimbabwe in April, sponsored by the American Embassy.

Jenkins appeared in Broadway's Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me, Caroline or Change, The Civil War and Bacharach & David's The Look of Love, and received a Drama Desk nomination for her solo performance in (mis)Understanding Mammy: The Hattie McDaniel Story.
