Hunter Parrish

Hunter Parrish, who plays Silas on the acclaimed Showtime series "Weeds," will join the Broadway cast of the Tony-winning musical Spring Awakening in August.

Parrish will step into the role of Melchior, the young radical, beginning Aug. 18. He succeeds Kyle Riabko, who will play his final performance Aug. 2. Riabko is departing to head the cast of the national tour of Spring Awakening.

In a statement actor Parrish said, "I have always hoped that my passion for the theatre would eventually lead me to Broadway. Spring Awakening is a truly one-of-a-kind show with its timeless story, commanding music and innovative imagery. I am elated to have the opportunity to become a part of it."

The Spring producers added, "We are thrilled to have Hunter Parrish join the cast and welcome him to the Spring Awakening family. We knew Hunter is a wonderful actor, the surprise is that he is also a terrific singer. He will be a great asset to the company."

Hunter Parrish has appeared in "Freedom Writers" and "RV" and will soon be seen in "17 Again."

As previously announced, Blake Bashoff, who plays the ill-fated Moritz in the Broadway company of Spring, will also depart the New York cast to star in the show's national tour. His Broadway replacement has yet to be named.

Based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening won eight 2007 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Spring Awakening features direction by Michael Mayer, choreography by Bill T. Jones, book and lyrics by Steven Sater and a score by Duncan Sheik.

Songs featured in the Tony-winning score are "All That's Known," "And Then There Were None," "Blue Wind/Don't Do Sadness," "Left Behind," "Mamma Who Bore Me," "My Junk, "The Bitch of Living," "The Dark I Know Well," "The Guilty Ones," "The Song of Purple Summer," "The Word of Your Body," "Those You've Known," "Totally Fucked," "Touch Me," "Whispering" and "The Mirror-Blue Night."

Spring Awakening's cast album recently earned a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.

The musical made its world premiere Off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company in June 2006. Spring Awakening transferred to Broadway the following November, where it continues to play at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre.
