Blasted, Sixty Miles to Silver Lake and Rambo Solo Set for Soho Rep Season

By Adam Hetrick
07 Jul 2008

Marin Ireland, Reed Birney and Louis Cancelmi will star in Sarah Kane's controversial work, Blasted, as the first offering of Soho Rep's 2008-2009 season.

Blasted was originally slated to conclude the 2007-2008 season at Soho Rep, but was rescheduled to accommodate the schedule of Ireland and to provide the Obie-winning company sufficient time to locate a new executive director.

Under the direction of Soho Rep artistic director Sarah Benson, Blasted will now begin performances Oct. 2. "Kane's startling imagery and bleak humor forge a potent theatrical vision of destruction, collapse and, ultimately, redemption and love," according to production notes.

The work – with scenes of brutal rape and cannibalism – came under critical fire when it made its London debut in 1995. Playwrights Harold Pinter, Caryl Churchill and Martin Crimp all came to the defense of Kane, who would later commit suicide in 1999.

Also slated for the 2008-2009 season is the world premiere of Dan LeFranc's Sixty Miles to Silver Lake, which begins performances Nov. 25. Co-presented with Page 73 Productions, Silver Lake "is a linguistically adventurous two-character work that gives language to memory and that covers seven years in the relationship of a boy and his father," press notes state.

Anne Kauffman directs the play that was featured as part of Soho Rep's Writer/Director Lab.

The Nature Theatre of Oklahoma – who staged the critically acclaimed No Dice for Soho Rep – return with their latest adventure, Rambo Solo. Rambo Solo, which begins in mid-March, is built upon actor Zachary Oberzan's deep-seated obsession with "Rambo: First Blood" and is described as "a complex examination of version and memory in which the company strives to recount the entire plot in all its sweaty, athletic detail, stopping along the way to consider issues of character, realism, ownership, psychology, character, and ultimately — adaptation."

The work is conceived and directed by Kelly Copper and Pavol Liska with video design by Peter Nigrini.

Additional casting and creative duties will be announced at a later date.

Soho Rep has announced that Thomas Bradshaw (Purity Prophet) will be the 2008-2009 Soho Rep Dorothy Streslin Playwrighting Fellow for a season that will feature Soho Rep's Studio Series of free workshops of new plays (including works by Erin Courtney and the Theater of the Two Headed Calf) and the 11th annual Writer/Director Lab in the spring.
