New York International Fringe Festival Announces 2008 Line-Up

By Adam Hetrick
08 Jul 2008

The Alice Complex, Revolution on the Roof, Spite, Walls, Tim Gunn's Podcast and Krapp, 39 are among the works slated for the 2008 New York International Fringe Festival.

The 12th annual Festival, running Aug. 8-24, will present the work of over 202 theatre companies from around the world. Twenty New York venues will play host to the new works that run the gamut from traditional comedies and dramas to musicals, performance art, dance, spoken word and multimedia works.

Selected FringeNYC highlights include Peter Barr Nickowitz's The Alice Complex starring Tony nominee Xanthe Elbrick (Coram Boy) and Lisa Banes (Arcadia); Michael Laurence (Talk Radio)'s one-man show Krapp, 39, inspired by Beckett's Krapp's Last Tape; the new comedy Kaboom! penned by Michael Small (The IT Girl) and directed by BT McNicholl (The Producers); and Jeffrey Lependorf's Tim Gunn's Podcast (a reality chamber opera), featuring John Schenkel in the title role.

Emmy Award winning comedy writer Ted Greenberg – the only stand-up comedian selected for the 2008 FringeNYC – will perform The Complete Performer; Aaron Hodges and Christopher Loar will swap roles nightly in Clone; Marc Geller and Bill Roulet are The Fabulous Kane Sisters in Box Office Poison; Lindsay Burns performs her one-woman work The VaJayJay Monologues; and "Urban Cowboy" scribe Aaron Latham brings to FringeNYC his new musical Revolution on the Roof, which boasts an original score by Dan Shay and Will Manning, supplemented by the songs of Joan Baez.

Additional productions include Tariq Hamami's serio-comedy Spite, directed by Mark Schneider (associate director of Boeing-Boeing); the world premiere of Aron Ezra's Walls featuring Julie Jesneck (Rock 'n' Roll); and Bob Jaffe repeating his multi-character work in David Eliet's exploration of hunger in America, But for the Grace.

A presentation of The Present Company, led by producing artistic director Elena K. Holy, FringeNYC venues include the Cherry Lane Theatre, Soho Playhouse, Spiegelworld's Deluxe, the Connelly Theater, the Players Theater, the Theatres at 45 Bleecker, the Barrow Street Theatre and the CSV Cultural and Educational Center.

Tickets, priced $15, begin sale July 18. For tickets and further information phone (212)279-4488 or visit FringeNYC.org.
