Alabama Shakespeare's West Side Story Begins to Rumble July 18

Alabama Shakespeare Festival's new production of the groundbreaking musical West Side Story begins July 18 in Montgomery, AL.

The Romeo and Juliet-inspired musical conceived by Jerome Robbins and written by Leonard Bernstein (music), Arthur Laurents (book) and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics) will open on the ASF Festival Stage July 20 and continue to Aug. 24.

Director-choreographer Karen Azenberg's cast includes Eric Santagata as Riff, Loren Christopher as Tony, Richard Gatta as Action, E. Scott Brateng as A-Rab, John William Hobson as Baby John, Michael Apuzzo as Snowboy, Brandon Tyler Fields as Big Deal, Timothy Hughes as Diesel, Tara Dunleavy as Graziella, Melissa Manning as Velma, Ashley Adamek as Clarice, Maria Totten as Anybodys, John Paul Mateo as Bernardo, Nina Negri as Maria, Jacqueline Colmer as Anita, Jose R. Luaces as Chino, Ano Okera as Pepe, J. David Anderson as Indio, Daniel Ryan Hunalp as Anxious, Albert Altovilla as Juano, Laurena Barros as Rosalia, Olivia Pollicicchio as Consuelo, Ashley Adamek as Teresita, Cassie Abate as Francisca, Lauren Sambataro as Margarita, David Spencer as Doc, Greg Thornton as Schrank, Rodney Clark as Krupke and Dennis McLernon as Glad Hand.

Azenberg has directed and choreographed West Side Story around the country. She choreographed Pioneer Theatre Company's smash, extended-run production of Les Misérables in 2007.

West Side Story's musical director is Thomas Hinds, assistant musical director is Carolyn Violi. The creative team includes scenic and lighting designer Paul Wonsek, costume designer Patrick Holt, sound designer Richelle Thompson, dramaturg Susan Willis, stage manager Mark D. Leslie, assistant stage manager Sara Lee Howell, production assistant Crystal McCall and dance captain Maria Totten.

In 2008-09, book writer Laurents will stage a new Broadway production of West Side Story that will offer a bilingual (Spanish and English) take on the material.
