Jeff Daniels' Comic Stage "Western" Gets Four Extra Weeks in MI

The Purple Rose Theatre Company's world-premiere run of Jeff Daniels' new comedy Panhandle Slim & The Oklahoma Kid has been extended by four weeks. Performances at the Equity theatre Daniels founded in his hometown of Chelsea, MI, now play to Sept. 27.

The additional performances are being added to accommodate record ticket sales. "Positive word-of-mouth created an overwhelming demand for tickets," stated managing director Alan Ribant. "We hope that adding another month of performances will allow thousands of additional patrons the opportunity to enjoy Panhandle Slim & The Oklahoma Kid this summer."

Tickets for the extension go on sale Aug. 4. The play opened June 28 and was originally scheduled to close at the end of August.

Daniels' 12th new play, Panhandle Slim & The Oklahoma Kid, is a Western-set "winsome comedy [that] tells the fateful tale of a prairie showdown between a vagrant outlaw and a singing cowboy. Thrown together by unfortunate circumstances, Panhandle Slim and The Oklahoma Kid argue the virtues of mayhem, music and the meaning of life."

The play features original songs, as well as "scoundrels, six-guns and a horse named Buttermilk."

PRTC artistic director Guy Sanville directs a cast that includes Jessica Garrett, Phil Powers, John Seibert and Tom Whalen.

All performances are at the Purple Rose Theatre, 137 Park Street, Chelsea, MI.
