Sondheim's Saturday Night to Play London's Jermyn Street Theatre in 2009

By Mark Shenton
18 Jul 2008

Stephen Sondheim's first intended Broadway musical Saturday Night — written in 1954 when he was 24 and originally due to premiere on Broadway in 1955, but canceled following the death of its producer, Lemuel Ayers – is returning to London more than a decade after its professional premiere in 1997 at the fringe Bridewell Theatre.

Saturday Night will now play the Jermyn Street Theatre, off Piccadilly Circus, for a five-week run beginning Feb. 10, 2009, and will include the U.K. premiere of two songs completed by Sondheim when he revised the show for its U.S. premiere in 1999: "Montana Chem" (a patter song that dramatizes the characters nervously following the stock prices of Montana Chemical Corp, in which they have invested all their savings) and "Delighted, I'M Sure" (whose lyrics, but not music, were written with the rest of the score in the 1950s).

The musical, which has a book by Julius J. Epstein based on the play by Julius and Philip G. Epstein called Front Porch in Flatbush, will be directed by Tom Littler, who directed the first revival of Charles Wood's Jingo: A Farce of War at the fringe Finborough this year, as well as the Scottish premiere of Sondheim's Passion on the Edinburgh Fringe in 2006. He is currently associate director of Peter Hall's productions of A Doll's House and Born in the Gardens at the Theatre Royal, Bath, and also recently assisted Hall on The Vortex and Little Nell.

Further details will be announced at a later date.
