Castaños, Durand, Karr, Kinney, Kinnunen and Violett Join Broadway's Spring Awakening

By Adam Hetrick
22 Jul 2008

Andrew Durand now plays Georg in the Tony-winning musical Spring Awakening.

Spring Awakening has welcomed several new cast members to the Tony-winning production at Broadway's Eugene O'Neill Theatre.

On July 19 original cast members Skylar Astin (Georg), Lilli Cooper (Martha), Brian Charles Johnson (Otto), Phoebe Strole (Anna) and Remy Zaken (Thea) played their final performance in the Duncan Sheik-Steven Sater musical.

Making their Broadway debuts as their replacements July 21 were Andrew Durand (Georg), Amanda Castaños (Martha), Gabriel Violett (Otto), Emily Kinney (Anna), Caitlin Kinnunen (Thea) and Morgan Karr (Ensemble).

The Broadway company also features Kyle Riabko (Melchior), Alexandra Socha (Wendla), Blake Bashoff (Moritz), Blake Daniel (Ernst), Emma Hunton (Ilse), Matt Doyle (Hanschen), Christine Estabrook (Adult Women), Glenn Fleshler (Adult Men), Gerard Canonico, Alice Lee, Eryn Murman, Jesse Swenson, Matt Shingledecker and Jenna Ushkowitz.

"Weeds" star Hunter Parrish will step into the role of Melchior, the young radical, beginning Aug. 18. He succeeds Kyle Riabko, who will play his final performance Aug. 2. Riabko and co-star Blake Bashoff (Moritz) are departing the Broadway company to head the cast of the national tour of Spring Awakening, which plays a pre-tour stop at San Diego's Balboa Theatre beginning Aug. 15, prior to its official premiere at San Francisco's Curran Theatre Sept. 4.

Based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening won eight 2007 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Spring Awakening features direction by Michael Mayer, choreography by Bill T. Jones, book and lyrics by Steven Sater and a score by Duncan Sheik.

Songs featured in the Tony-winning score are "All That's Known," "And Then There Were None," "Blue Wind/Don't Do Sadness," "Left Behind," "Mamma Who Bore Me," "My Junk, "The Bitch of Living," "The Dark I Know Well," "The Guilty Ones," "The Song of Purple Summer," "The Word of Your Body," "Those You've Known," "Totally Fucked," "Touch Me," "Whispering" and "The Mirror-Blue Night."

Spring Awakening's cast album earned a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.

The musical made its world premiere Off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company in June 2006. Spring Awakening transferred to Broadway the following November, where it continues to play at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre.
