Irving, D'Abruzzo and Kaplan Set for Summer Shorts Festival

Oscar nominee Amy Irving ("Yentl") and Tony Award nominees Jonathan C. Kaplan (Falsettos) and Stephanie D'Abruzzo (Avenue Q) have been cast in the 2nd annual Summer Shorts festival at 59E59 Theatres.

Running July 31-Aug. 28, Summer Shorts will present eight world premiere American short plays divided into two separate rotating evenings. Maruti Evans provides scenic and lighting design for all eight productions.

In addition to newly revealed casting, Summer Shorts has announced that playwright Eduardo Machado will be represented with Crossing the Border, rather than his previously announced work In Paradise.

The plays and their respective casts for Summer Shorts Series A follow:

  • The Waters of March
    By Leslie Lyles
    Directed by Billy Hopkins
    Featuring Amy Irving
    "A women who has devoted herself to her career comes to the ultimate crossroads."

  • Crossing the Border
    By Eduardo Machado
    Featuring Mando Alvarado and Gio Perez
    "South of the border, a father and son get caught up in baseball fever — but not for the usual reasons."

  • On a Bench
    By Neil Koenigsberg
    Directed by Merri Milwe
    Featuring Mary Joy and David Beck
    "Greenwich Village, New York. A teenage boy sits in a pocket park reading a book about the 1969 Stonewall Inn riots. When he is joined by a middle-aged woman, their encounter regarding the book, opens both of them up to an intense, probing look into each other's hidden truths."

  • Deep in the Hole
    By Roger Hedden
    Directed by Billy Hopkins
    Featuring J.J. Kandel, David Ross, Emily Tremaine and Kendra Mylnechuk
    "There's something amiss in the Heartland as Ben, Glen, Cindy and Lindy drink cheap vodka and hook-up."

  • Plaisir d'Amour

    "Ruth and Sam meet thirty years ago at a Carnegie Hall lieder recital and begin an ever accelerating ride through love, joy, pain and eventual compromise."

    Summer Shorts 2 will perform Tuesday through Saturday at 8:15 PM with 2:15 matinees on Saturdays and 3:15 PM matinees on Sundays.
