"Butter Up": Popcorn Is Heading to Broadway

| photo by Matt Squire | Ben Elton's Olivier Award-winning comedy Popcorn, based on his acclaimed novel of the same name, will arrive on Broadway in fall 2008, according to a casting notice.
Laurence Boswell will direct the production at a Broadway theatre to be announced. Producer is Mark Rozzano for Hoo R Us Productions.
Casting directors are looking to fill the roles of Karl, Velvet, Farrah, Scout, Brooke, Kirsten and Bill. The role of Wayne Hudson has been cast.
Elton's novel "Popcorn" was published in 1996. The novel, according to press notes, is described as such: "Bruce shoots movies. Wayne and Scout shoot to kill. In a single night they find out the hard way what's real and what's not, who's the hero and the villain. A nation watches in awe as Bruce and Wayne resolve the serious questions. Does art imitate life? And does Bruce use erection cream?"
Popcorn premiered at the Nottingham Playhouse before transferring to the West Yorkshire Playhouse. The play opened in London's West End in April 1997 at the Apollo Theatre. The production subsequently won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy.
Playwright Elton also penned the book and lyrics for Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Beautiful Game.
