Fisher's Wishful Drinking Will Toast Seattle in 2009

By Adam Hetrick
and Kenneth Jones
23 Jul 2008

Film icon and best-selling author Carrie Fisher will reminisce in her one-woman show Wishful Drinking, a new addition for the 2008-2009 season at Seattle Rep.

The Broadway-aimed production, under the direction of Tony Taccone (Bridge & Tunnel), replaces the previously announced presentation of Chay Yew's A Winter People. Wishful Drinking will run April 2–May 3, 2009.

Seattle Rep managing director Benjamin Moore said in a statement, "We are still very interested in bringing A Winter People to Seattle audiences; however the timing did not work out with our intended co-producer for this upcoming '08-09 season. We had the good fortune of engaging Carrie Fisher to perform her enthralling story on our stage and we leapt at the opportunity."

Wishful Drinking is making stops at numerous non-profit theatres nationwide, including Berkeley Rep, Hartford Stage, San Jose Repertory Theatre, Arena Stage, Santa Fe's Lensic Theatre and the Huntington Theatre Company.

Producer Jonathan Reinis previously revealed to Playbill.com that Wishful Drinking hoped to raise a glass on Broadway in March 2009. However, a theatre and dates have not been announced, and the Seattle engagement would conflict with March Broadway dates.

"Let Hollywood legend Carrie Fisher take you on a hilarious, shocking and totally true ride through her own Hollywood party…and hangover," read press notes for Wishful Drinking. "With the same unflinching wit that made her book 'Postcards from the Edge' a bestseller, Fisher dishes on her unbelievable life: Debbie Reynolds is her mother, Paul Simon was her husband (for a while), and in between battling addiction and vacationing in various mental institutions, she happened to star in a little film called 'Star Wars.'"

Alexander V. Nichols created scenic design, lighting design and projections for Wishful Drinking. Christina Wright is the costume designer.

Seattle Repertory Theatre is located at 155 Mercer Street in Seattle, WA. Season subscriptions and further information are available by calling (206) 443-2222, toll free at (877) 900-9285 or online at seattlerep.org.
