Aliens with Extraordinary Skills, Freshwater and Global Chill Set for Women's Project Season

By Adam Hetrick
23 Jul 2008

Anne Bogart will direct the first professional U.S. production of Virginia Woolf's Freshwater for the Women's Project 2008-2009 season.

Founded in 1978 by Julia Miles, the Women's Project is the oldest and largest theatre company in America devoted to theatrical works created by women.

Under the artistic direction of Julie Crosby, the Women's project will offer the world premiere of Aliens with Extraordinary Skills, as well as its annual HotHouse commissions, and the site-specific world premiere of Global Cooling: The Women Chill.

Romanian playwright and journalist Saviana Stanescu will be represented with her work Aliens with Extraordinary Skills, running Sept. 22-Oct. 26. Tea Alagic directs the work centering on "a clown from the unhappiest country in the world, Moldova, who pins her hopes on a US work visa by creating balloon animals. Chased by Homeland Security, a deportation letter deflates her enthusiasm, and a pair of spike heels might be all it takes to burst her American Dream."

The cast comprises Seth Fisher (Rock 'n' Roll), Gian-Murray Gianino (Paradise Park), Kevin Isola (Brooklyn Boy), Natalia Payne (New Jerusalem) and Jessica Pimentel (Anna in the Tropics).

Virginia Woolf's Freshwater will play Jan. 15-Feb. 15, 2009. A collaboration between Women's Project and SITI Company, Freshwater is described as "a deliberately witty and wacky universe peopled with a tribe of artists, friends, and lovers in a playful mood."

Bringing the likes of Mary Magdalene, Ellen Terry, George Frederick Watts and Alfred Lord Tennyson to life will be Akiko Aizawa (Hotel Cassiopeia), Will Bond (Orestes), Gian-Murray Gianino (Paradise Park), Ellen Lauren (Who Do You Think You Are), Kelly Maurer (Radio Macbeth), Barney O'Hanlon (Who Do You Think You Are) and Stephen Duff Webber (Radio Macbeth).

In May of 2009, the Women's Project will present the world premiere of the site-specific work Global Cooling: The Women Chill, which will be written, directed and produced by WP Lab members. In September, the Women's Project will reveal its 2009 commissioned HotHouse production.

Tickets for Women's Project productions range $15-$42, and will begin sale Aug. 1. For tickets phone (212) 239-6200 or visit Telecharge.com.
