Steve Ross to Return to London with Sondheim Cabaret, Good Thing Going

By Mark Shenton
24 Jul 2008

Steve Ross, who last played London earlier this year as part of the American Songbook in London series at Jermyn Street Theatre will return to the city in the fall.

From Oct. 21-26 Ross will reprise his Good Thing Going program of the songs of Stephen Sondheim and more, this time at Pizza on the Park, the basement jazz and cabaret club near Hyde Park Corner.

Ross first presented this program in the inaugural Jermyn Street season in 2007, before taking it to the Algonquin's Oak Room in New York where he has made regular appearances for the last 30 years. The season will coincide with the release of a new studio recording of the show, which is directed by British helmer Duncan Knowles, who is also co-producing the season with Samuel Joseph.

According to press materials, the rich and expansive program illustrates the extraordinary scope of Sondheim's genius, with Ross offering revelatory and breathtaking insight into the songs of one of Broadway's greatest figures. There will also be a generous dose of classics from the American songbook "in the debonair and seamless style that has established Steve Ross as one of the great cabaret performers."

The upcoming engagement continues a 25-year association with London audiences for Ross, which began with a season at the Ritz Hotel and has also embraced regular prior appearances at Pizza on the Park. Internationally, he has appeared at the Crillon in Paris and the Imperial Hotel in Hong Kong, as well as festivals in Hong Kong, Perth and Spoleto. In 1996, he appeared in the Broadway revival of Present Laughter at the Walter Kerr, in a cast that also included Frank Langella and Allison Janney.
