Hair Extension: Shakespeare in the Park Production Will Now Play Through Sept. 7

| photo by Michal Daniel | The Shakespeare in the Park production of Hair, under the direction of Diane Paulus, has extended its limited engagement for a second time.
Originally slated to run July 22-Aug. 17, Hair was first extended through Aug. 31 and has now added an additional week of performances through Sept. 7. Hair began performances July 22 and officially opened Aug. 7 at the Delacorte Theater.
In a statement Public Theater artistic director Oskar Eustis said, "During a rain delay at The Delacorte Theater last Saturday, the audience chanted, 'Hell no, we won't go!' Now the company of Hair is chanting it right back. I am delighted to say that the overwhelming demand for Hair has led us to extend the production for another week. I am thrilled that this musical has struck such a nerve with our city."
The production, which features choreography by Karole Armitage (Passing Strange), reunites much of the 40th anniversary cast of Hair, which played the outdoor theatre in September 2007.
As previously announced, due to a prior film commitment, Jonathan Groff, who portrays Claude in the Central Park staging, is unable to remain with the company through its original extension. The former Spring Awakening cast member exits the production Aug. 16 and will be succeeded by Christopher J. Hanke (Cry-Baby) beginning Aug. 17. Hanke will remain with the production through its extended run.

Moauro (Tribe), Darius Nichols (Hud), Brandon Pearson (Tribe), Megan Reinking (Black Boys Trio/Tribe), Paris Remillard (Tribe), Bryce Ryness (Woof), Saycon Sengbloh (White Boys Trio/Tribe), Maya Sharpe (Tribe), Kacie Sheik (Jeanie), Theo Stockman (Tribe) and Tommar Wilson (Tribe).
The creative team comprises Scott Pask (set design), Michael McDonald (costume design), Michael Chybowski (lighting design) and Acme Sound Partners (sound design).
Featuring book and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni and music by Galt MacDermot, Hair made theatre history for its rock 'n roll anti-establishment concept.
Performances of Shakespeare in the Park are Tuesday-Sunday at 8 PM. Tickets are free and are available on the day of the performance (two per person) at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park beginning at 1 PM, or by entering the Public's online ticketing lottery at www.publictheater.org.
The closest entrances to the Delacorte are located at 81st Street and Central Park West or 70th Street and Fifth Avenue.
