Penned by Nilaja Sun, who currently stars in the national tour of her one-woman work, the Theaterworks production features a four-member ensemble who inhabit the various characters portrayed in the award-winning play.
Under the direction of Rob Ruggiero, No Child… continues through Sept. 28.
Donnetta Lavinia Grays (Well) portrays Nilaja Sun, with Anthony Mark Stockard, Lizan Mitchell (Having Our Say) and Portia portraying the roles of students, teachers and parents.
Production notes for No Child… ask audiences to "follow a teaching artist as [she heads] into one of New York's toughest inner-city schools. Over the course of six weeks, the teacher attempts to get the students to put on a play. Over a dozen characters including the school's parents, teachers, administrators, a janitor, and the students, for whom just getting to school every day can be a struggle, come to life in this bracing comedic tour-de-force."
