LaMaMa to Present Calling: An Opera of Forgiveness

By Adam Hetrick
07 Aug 2008

LaMaMa e.t.c. will premiere the 9/11-inspired work Calling: An Opera of Forgiveness beginning Sept. 12.

Based on Wickham Boyle's 2002 book "A Mother's Essays from Ground Zero," Boyle will direct the stage adaptation of her work that features an electro-acoustic score by Douglas Geers. Calling runs Sept. 12-28 at LaMaMa.

The cast will include Nicole Tori (Mother), Roland Burks (Father), Jesse Murray (Son) and Nique Haggerty (Daughter).

The opera, according to press notes, "recounts the up-close experience of one downtown family on 9/11, and the month immediately following it. Blending drama, music, choreography and a soaring architectural set, it captures the reactions and reflections of one family witnessing the attack on the World Trade Center at close range, and the path they take to move from chaos to recovery and hope."

The musical ensemble features Michiko Chiba (clarinet), Edith Hirshtal (piano), Chihiro Shibayama (percussion), Maja Cerar (violin), Summer Boggess (cello) and composer Douglas Geers (computers).

The creative team comprises Edith Hirshtal (music director), Edisa Weeks (choreographer), Hiroya Miura (conductor), Marty Kapell (set design) and Burke Brown (lighting design).

Tickets are available by calling (212) 475-7710 or by visiting www.lamama.org.

LaMaMa e.t.c. is located at 74A East 4th Street in Manhattan.
