Montgomery and Allen's Triumph of the Underdog Plays Aug. 8-24 in Manhattan

Triumph of the Underdog, a new play penned by Mitch Montgomery and Morgan Allen, begins performances in New York City Aug. 8.

Part of the 11th Annual New York International Fringe Festival, the production will play the Schaeberle Studio Theatre through Aug. 24. The one-man show, under the direction of Barbara Williams, features co-author Montgomery and the voice talents of Belinda Hodler and Forrest Simmons.

Triumph of the Underdog, according to press notes, is described as such: "Disillusioned science fiction author Peter Howell frantically speeds through the history of science fiction — from Mesopotamia to NASA and 'Star Trek' in 20 minutes — pausing only long enough to lament his failed career and his recent unemployment. In lieu of a more traditional structure, [the play] is presented with all the usual trappings of an actual lecture – PowerPoint slides, anecdotal stories and, you know, suddenly having to save the world from fiery cosmic destruction!"

Mitch Montgomery, a co-founder of Body Politic Theater, was instrumental in mounting that company's maiden production of Catherine Filloux's Lemkin's House in 2006. Twice nominated for the Kennedy Center/American College Theater Festival's Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship Award, Montgomery has worked for The Shubert Organization, The Summer Play Festival and as a theatre critic for www.OffOffOnline.com. He is also Creative Coordinator at Marvel Entertainment.

Morgan Allen is general manager of New Dramatists and has also produced playwright Catherine Filloux's plays Lemkin's House (78th Street Theater Lab and Body Politic Theater) and Killing the Boss (Cherry Lane Theatre). He is a co-founder and board member of Body Politic Theater; he will develop and produce a new commission by playwright Carlyle Brown at that theatre next year. Allen's plays Precious Stone, Judas Pigeon and Leap have been workshopped and produced in Savannah, GA, and New York City.

The Schaeberle Studio Theatre is located in Manhattan at 41 Park Row. Tickets, priced $15, are available by visiting www.FringeNYC.org. For more information go to www.triumphoftheunderdog.blogspot.com.
