Editor Jeffrey Eric Jenkins announced the ten "Best Plays of 2007-2008" Aug. 11.

Essays about the ten plays will be featured in the upcoming tome, the latest in the acclaimed series that dates back to 1920. Jenkins, in consultation with his editorial board — Tish Dace, Christine Dolen, Sylviane Gold, Robert Hurwitt, John Istel, Chris Jones, Charles McNulty, Julius Novick, Christopher Rawson, Alisa Solomon, Jeffrey Sweet, Anne Marie Welsh, Linda Winer, Charles Wright and consulting editor Robert Brustein — chose the top-ten list from a mix of Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway productions. Plays up for consideration opened between June 1, 2007 and May 31, 2008.

The ten plays chosen and the essayists who will write about them follow:

  • Adding Machine by Jason Loewith and Joshua Schmidt (essayist, Michael Feingold)
  • August: Osage County by Tracy Letts (essayist, Chris Jones)
  • The Farnsworth Invention by Aaron Sorkin (essayist, Christopher Rawson)
  • Dividing the Estate by Horton Foote (essayist, Garrett Eisler)
  • Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl (essayist, Celia Wren)
  • 100 Saints You Should Know by Kate Fodor (essayist, John Istel)
  • The Receptionist by Adam Bock (essayist, David Cote)
  • Rock 'n' Roll by Tom Stoppard (essayist, Charles Wright)
  • The Seafarer by Conor McPherson (essayist, Charles McNulty)
  • Yellow Face by David Henry Hwang (essayist, Dan Bacalzo)

Edward Albee is also honored with a Special Citation for Peter and Jerry.

In addition to the plays, the 89th edition of the series also honors three regional plays (Moisés Kaufman's 33 Variations at Arena Stage in Washington, DC; Deborah Zoe Laufer's End Days at Florida Stage in Manalapan, FL; and Sara Ruhl's Dead Man's Cellphone at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington, DC) and provides a collection of facts and figures about the year in American theatre.

Limelight Editions will publish "Best Plays of 2007-2008" in early 2009.
