Ghostlight Will Release Vintage Recording, "Patti LuPone at Les Mouches"

By Andrew Gans
14 Aug 2008

It was during her Tony-winning run in the original Broadway production of Evita when current Gypsy star Patti LuPone also took the cabaret world by storm.

For 27 consecutive weeks, LuPone played Saturday evenings at midnight (following her 8 PM performance in Evita) at the now-closed nightclub Les Mouches. Nearly 30 years later a recording of that acclaimed concert act will be released on the Ghostlight Records label.

"Patti LuPone at Les Mouches," which features a digitally restored recording of LuPone's 1980 club act, will arrive in stores on CD Nov. 11.

"Ghostlight President Kurt Deutsch," according to a press statement, "along with longtime producing partner Joel Moss and co-producers Ben Rimalower and David Lewis, have culled performances from the venue's original board mixes, and assembled a recording that captures the raw energy and excitement of a once in a lifetime concert event, and a moment in time."

Listeners can expect to hear LuPone's powerful renditions of Patti Smith/Bruce Springsteen's "Because the Night" and Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" as well as Evita's "Rainbow High" and "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," Stephen Schwartz's "Meadowlark," Stephen Sondheim's "Not While I'm Around" and the popular Harold Arlen-Johnny Mercer standard "Come Rain or Come Shine."

A complete track list will be announced shortly.

LuPone's 1980 club act was deemed so exceptional that Leslie Kritzer — on Broadway this past season in A Catered Affair — recently re-created the show — including songs and patter — to much acclaim at Joe's Pub for an extended, MAC Award-winning engagement.

Patti LuPone is currently enjoying what is perhaps her biggest stage success to date. For her performance as Rose in the current revival of Gypsy at the St. James Theatre, the singing actress has won the Tony Award, the Drama Desk Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award and the Drama League's Distinguished Performance Award. A Tony Award winner for her work in Evita, LuPone also earned an Olivier Award for her performances in the West End productions of Les Misérables and The Cradle Will Rock. Her other theatrical credits include Sunset Boulevard, Anything Goes, Oliver!, Working, The Old Neighborhood, Master Class and Pal Joey. LuPone also headlined two solo Broadway concerts, Patti LuPone On Broadway and Matters of the Heart, and received glowing notices for her performance as Mrs. Lovett in the Lincoln Center concert version of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd and a Tony nomination for her performance in the recent revival of that Sondheim work. She was seen in the Kennedy Center's staging of Marc Blitzstein's Regina and joined Audra McDonald for Los Angeles Opera's production of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht's Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. She was also seen as Rose in a Ravinia Festival concert run of Gypsy. Her screen and recording credits are numerous.
