Foley, Mathews, Dexter, Hack and More to Star in FreeFall's The Wild Party

By Andrew Gans
05 Sep 2008

FreeFall Theatre Company, Tampa Bay's new theatre, will make its debut with George C. Wolfe and Michael John LaChiusa's The Wild Party.

FreeFall artistic director Eric Davis will helm the production, which is scheduled to begin previews Sept. 17 at Studio@620. Performances will continue through Sept. 28.

The upcoming production promises to "immerse the audience in the boisterous and decadent world of 1920s Manhattan by erasing the line between audience and action. The entire venue will become the playing space as the audience sits inside the set, among the cast."

The company will feature David Foley, Jr. (Burrs), Lee Anne Mathews (Queenie), Michael Dexter (Phil), Jonathan Hack (Jackie), Rachel Potter (Mae), Becca McCoy (Madelaine), John Lombardi (Goldberg), Wayne LeGette (Gold), Roxanne Fay (Dolores), Kerry Lynn Foley (Mae), Patte Depova (Kate), James Martin Roberts (Black), Nicole Kaplan (Nadine), Dean-Carlo Grant (Eddie) and William Cortez-Statham (Oscar). Luerne Herrera will be the musical director.

"Manhattan decadence in the 1920s provides the backdrop for this tough musical fable," according to freeFall Theatre Company. "Queenie, a vaudeville chorine, hosts the blow-out of the title with her vicious lover, a black-face minstrel, and the guests are a vivid collection of the unruly and the undone. The jazz and gin soaked party rages with a mounting sense of threat, and when midnight debauchery leads to tragedy at dawn, the high-flying characters land with a sobering thud, reminding us that no party lasts forever."

The Wild Party is based on Joseph Moncure March's celebrated jazz age poem of the same name and features music and lyrics by Michael John LaChiusa and a book by LaChiusa and George C. Wolfe. The original Broadway production, directed by Wolfe, played 36 previews and 68 regular performances at the Virginia Theatre in 2000. The New York cast included Toni Collette, Leah Hocking, Eartha Kitt, Marc Kudisch, Norm Lewis, Michael McElroy, Mandy Patinkin and Tonya Pinkins.

Studio@620 is located at 620 First Avenue South in St. Petersburg, FL. Tickets, priced $20-$34.50, are available by visiting www.studio620.org or by calling (727) 895-6620.
