Brandes and Telushkin's The Quarrel Opens Off-Broadway Sept. 7

By Adam Hetrick
07 Sep 2008

The Quarrel, a battle of faith and tolerance, officially opens Off-Broadway at the DR2 Sept. 7.

Adapted by David Brandes and Joseph Telushkin from Chaim Grade's short story "My Quarrel with Hersh Rasseyner," The Quarrel began performances Sept. 2 and plays a limited engagement through Sept. 28.

The Off-Broadway incarnation is based on PBS' American Playhouse teleplay in which "two estranged friends, torn apart by personal betrayal and uprooted by war, meet after years of separation. One has become an Orthodox rabbi, the other a secular writer. Their accidental meeting sparks a battle of wits that tests the limits of friendship, faith and tolerance."

Reuven Russell and Sam Guncler co-star in the production that also features Federico Trigo. Robert Walden directs.

Sam Guncler has appeared on Broadway in The Gathering as well as in the Off-Broadway stagings of Bug and The Goldman Project. Reuven Russell, who originated the role of Hersh in the stage premiere of The Quarrel, has appeared in the films "Chaplin,"" Inside Monkey Zetterland" and "The Proprietor."

Following the Sept. 7 opening-night performance, The Quarrel's co-writer, Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, will lead post-show discussions about the play.

The production plays Sundays through Thursdays, with no performances on the Jewish Sabbath (Friday sundown through Saturday sundown).

For tickets phone (212) 239-6200 or visit TheQuarrel.
