Nicky Silver's Three Changes Extends Run; Hopper to Join Cast

By Andrew Gans
and Kenneth Jones
05 Sep 2008

The world premiere of Nicky Silver's dark comedy Three Changes, which began performances at Off-Broadway's Playwrights Horizons Aug. 22, has extended its run prior to its official opening.

The production, which will officially open Sept. 16, had been scheduled to play a limited run through Sept. 28. The Silver play will now run an extra week through Oct. 3; two special matinee performances have also been added on Wednesdays, Sept. 10 and 24 at 2:30 PM.

Beginning Sept. 30, the role of Nate — currently played by Dylan McDermott — will be played by Obie Award winner Tim Hopper (More Stately Mansions, Picasso at the Lapine Agile, Present Laughter; "Grey's Anatomy"). McDermott cannot play the additional week due to prior commitments.

Wilson Milam (a Tony Award nominee for Broadway's The Lieutenant of Inishmore) directs the staging at the Mainstage Theater of the Playwrights Horizons complex on West 42nd Street. Silver is the author of Fit to Be Tied at Playwrights Horizons, The Food Chain, Pterodactyls, Raised in Captivity.

In addition to Golden Globe winner and Emmy Award nominee McDermott ("The Practice," Broadway's Biloxi Blues), the cast also features Emmy Award nominee Maura Tierney (Dr. Abby Lockhart on "E.R.," Some Girl(s) at MCC); film, television and stage star Scott Cohen (Drunk Enough to Say I Love You? at The Public, Broadway's Losing Louie, "Gilmore Girls"); Aya Cash (The Pain and the Itch at Playwrights Horizons, From Up Here at MTC); and Brian J. Smith (Good Boys and True at Second Stage, MTC's Come Back, Little Sheba).

According to PH, "In Three Changes, Nate (Dylan McDermott) and Laurel (Maura Tierney) are a comfortably married, Upper West Side couple — until Nate's wayward brother Hal (Scott Cohen) arrives from Hollywood. What at first seems a casual visit, a chance to reconnect, is quickly revealed as something more ominous. Hal may have had success, but human connection is all that matters, and he intends to make connections — no matter who pays the price."

It's billed as "a funny and darkly suspenseful look at the joy of family, and how far we'll go to get it."

The production features scenic design by two-time Obie Award winner Neil Patel, costume design by Theresa Squire, lighting design by Ben Stanton and sound design by Bart Fasbender. Production stage manager is William H. Lang.

Playwrights Horizons is located at 416 West 42nd Street. For ticket information, call Ticket Central at (212) 279-4200, or purchase online at the Playwrights Horizons website at www.playwrightshorizons.org.
