NYMF Announces "Next Broadway Sensation" Competition

By Adam Hetrick
05 Sep 2008

For the third consecutive year, the New York Musical Theatre Festival will seek an unknown talent to be named the "Next Broadway Sensation."

Previously known as "Broadway Idol," the 2008 competition will take place Friday evenings at 11 PM at the Zipper Tavern, from Sept. 22-Oct. 3.

Featuring musical direction by Christopher D. Littlefield and direction by David F. Chapman, "Next Broadway Sensation" will hold open auditions 10 AM-7 PM at Roy Arias Theatre Center (300 West 43rd Street). Callbacks will take place the following day.

Contestants, who may not have any prior Broadway credits, are asked to prepare 16 bars of the showtune that best demonstrates their vocal abilities.

The winner of the 2007 "Broadway Idol" competition, George Psomas, received a solo concert at the Zipper Factory as a result of being named the winner of last year's competition. Psomas also recently made his Broadway debut in the Lincoln Center Theater revival of South Pacific.

Judges involved in prior years include Marc Shaiman, Donna Lynne Champlin, Lillias White, Anthony Rapp, Lonny Price, Jose Llana, Mandy Gonzales, Manoel Felciano and Stephanie D'Abruzzo.

The three-week New York Musical Theatre Festival, running Sept. 15-Oct. 5, features musicals from around the world, culled from invitations and an open-submission process. Numerous Broadway veterans lend their talents to the new works, many of which have found commercial life Off-Broadway, and for the first time, on Broadway with [title of show].

Tickets for all NYMF productions are currently available by visiting NYMF.
