Ronald Reagan to Be Explored in New Solo Play and Film

By Adam Hetrick
11 Sep 2008

Screenwriter Lionel Chetwynd is penning a one-man stage play about the life of the late former U.S. President Ronald Reagan.

Variety reports that David Permut and Mark Travis, who produced the biographical play and subsequent Oscar-nominated film Give 'Em Hell Harry, are financing a ten-city tour of Reagan that is aiming to culminate in a filming of the stage production in Washington, D.C.

"Reagan's personal story is compelling and interesting, regardless of where one stands politically. There are many of the same American-Dream dynamics in play that made Truman's life work so well on the stage and screen," Permut told the industry paper.

Although casting has not been confirmed, Permut told Variety that a major name is in talks to portray the former U.S. President. The Reagan family is also reportedly on board in a consulting capacity for the biographical work.

Lionel Chetwynd has penned "Kissinger and Nixon," "To Heal a Nation," "Hanoi Hilton," "Ruby Ridge, An American Tragedy," "The Man Who Captured Eichmann," "Darkness at High Noon: The Carl foreman Documents" and "DC 9/11: Time of Crisis." A Reagan supporter, Chetwynd was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve on the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities in 2001.
