The New York Musical Theatre Festival's production of Play It Cool begins performances Sept. 22 at the TBG Theatre.

Directed by Sharon Rosen, the new musical will play the Off-Broadway venue through Oct. 4. Tony nominee Sally Mayes (She Loves Me) and Tarzan's Josh Strickland head a cast that also includes Michael McGuirk as Henry, Victoria Lecta Cave as Lena and Daniel Torres as Eddie.

Play It Cool was conceived by Larry Dean Harris and features a book by Martin Casella and Harris. Lyrics were penned by Mark Winkler with music by Phillip Swann and additional musical contributions by Jim Andron, Michael Cruz, Marilyn Harris, Robert Kraft, Emilio Palame, Joe Pasquale, Dan Siegel, Larry Steelman.

The jazz musical, according to press notes, is a "five person musical centered around Mary's Hideaway, a fictional jazz club, in 1953. Inspired by the period's film noir, this jazz musical examines laws governing gay and lesbian clubs of the time; when women weren't allowed to bartend and men couldn't dance with other men; when every glance had a double meaning, every word was an innuendo and everything had to be done to strict code."

The creative team also includes musical director Joseph Baker, choreographer Marvin Tunney, set designer Lara Fabian, costume designer T. Michael Hall, lighting designer Deb Sullivan and sound designers Peter Fitzgerald and Carl Casella.

Show times are Sept. 22 at 8 PM, Sept. 24 at 4:30 PM, Sept. 28 at 8 PM, Sept. 29 at 1 PM, Oct. 3 at 8 PM and Oct. 4 at 1 PM.

The TBG Theatre is located in Manhattan at 312 West 36th Street. For tickets visit www.nymf.org or call (212) 352-3101.
