The Chicago premiere of the Tony Award-nominated musical, Caroline, or Change, starring E. Faye Butler in the title role of a maid struggling with job, family and a changing world, opens Sept. 20 at the Court Theatre.

Librettist-lyricist Tony Kushner and composer Jeanine Tesori's musical drama set in 1963 Louisiana is directed by artistic director Charles Newell, with musical direction by Doug Peck. Previews began Sept. 11, for a run to Oct. 19.

"The coins that eight-year-old Noah carelessly leaves behind in his pockets are more than just spare change to Caroline Thibodeax, an African American housekeeper working in a stifling basement laundry room in Louisiana in 1963," according to Court notes. "Blending blues, gospel, and traditional Jewish melodies in a breathtaking score, this deeply personal story from Pulitzer Prize-winner Tony Kushner (Angels in America) is drawn from the playwright's own childhood. The vast social change taking place in 1960s America is the perfect backdrop for a powerful story…"

The designers are John Culbert (scenic design), Joshua Horvath (sound design), Robert Denton (lighting design) and Jacqueline Firkins (costume design). Ellen Hay is the production stage manager, and Wendy Woodward is the assistant stage manager. Sean Blake is the movement consultant.

Caroline, or Change was first workshopped in May 1999 at The Public Theater, where it opened in 2003. After an Off-Broadway run it transferred to the Eugene O'Neill Theatre and ran for a total of 136 performances, starring Tonya Pinkins in the title role. It was nominated for six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Actress, Best Score and Best Book. The musical won the Olivier Award in 2007, for Best New Musical.
