Jena Malone, Lili Taylor and Tony Award winner John Cullum will star in The New Group's forthcoming Off-Broadway revival of Eugene O'Neill's Mourning Becomes Electra.

New Group artistic director Scott Elliott will stage the work that is scheduled to begin previews Jan. 27, 2009, toward an official opening Feb. 19 at The Acorn @ Theatre Row.

O'Neill sets his trilogy of plays (based on Aeschylus' The Oresteia) in a New England town "at the end of the Civil War," according to show notes. "General Mannon's wife and daughter await his return with very different agendas. When his battle-scarred son Orin finally arrives, he finds a house divided and a tragedy in the making."

Screen star Malone ("Saved," "Donnie Darko") — previously seen on stage in Broadway's Doubt — will appear in the role of Lavinia Mannon.

A New Group veteran of Aunt Dan and Lemon, Taylor will play Christine Mannon. The actress, known for her screen work in "Mystic Pizza," "I Shot Andy Warhol," "High Fidelity" and "Six Feet Under," has also been seen on stage in Landscape of the Body and Three Sisters.

Cullum — last seen in a short stint on Broadway in August: Osage County — handles the role of Seth Beckwith. He earned his Tony wins for On the Twentieth Century and Shenandoah and has also appeared in 110 in the Shade, Cymbeline and "Northern Exposure."

Mourning Becomes Electra will follow New Group's season opener, Kevin Elyot's Mouth to Mouth. Mark Brokaw directs that work, which begins Oct. 20 and opens Nov. 6. The company will close its season with Seth Rosenfeld's Handball (starting April 27, 2009, and opening May 14).
