Brick to Replace St. Amand in Judy and Me Off-Broadway

By Adam Hetrick
and Andrew Gans
29 Sep 2008

Newcomer Christopher Brick has been announced to replace actor Dusty St. Amand in the Off-Broadway production of Judy and Me which is set to begin previews Oct. 7 at St. Luke's Theatre.

Producers of the production have announced that St. Amand, who was to make his Off-Broadway debut in the play starring Garland impersonator Peter Mac, will be replaced by Long Island native Christopher Brick in the lead role of Anthony "Tony" Castalano.

"We think Dusty is an amazing person and a gifted performer," producer Dr. John Schaefer said in a statement. "However, the actor and role never quite came together the way we hoped they would."

"I am excited about the introduction of Christopher Brick to New York City audiences in the role of Tony," Schaefer added. "He has all of the naiveté and vulnerability and 'Yes, I will make it over the rainbow' qualities that are essential to the character."

Peter Mac, who has also penned Judy and Me, leads a cast including Elyse Beyer, Jean Ann Kump, Chris McCabe and Basil Meola. Judy and Me will officially open Off-Broadway Oct. 19.

"Addressing the issues of both homophobia and domestic abuse," the play, according to press notes, "recounts the true story of 16-year old character Anthony, trapped in the narrow-minded suburb of Elmont, Long Island (and the real hometown of playwright Mac).

"An outcast at Sewankawa High School in Floral Park, Anthony is the daily target of verbal and physical torment from his classmates. His life at home is equally tenuous, as his volatile, violent father is a constant source of pain to both Anthony and his mother. The teen finds his only escape in the music and entertainment of the iconic Judy Garland, who comes to life before his very eyes and counsels him through his daily struggles."

Show times are Tuesdays-Saturdays at 8 PM and Sundays at 7 PM with matinees Saturdays at 2 PM and Sundays at 3 PM.

Tickets, priced $47.50-$72.50, will be available by calling (212) 239-6200 or by visiting www.telecharge.com.
