Spring Awakening Joins Rock the Vote Campaign

By Adam Hetrick
30 Sep 2008

Hunter Parrish and the current Broadway cast of Spring Awakening are seen in a new video as part of the "Rock the Vote" campaign.

The public service announcement features Spring Awakening cast members Hunter Parrish, Gerard Canonico, Blake Daniel, Amanda Castaños, Eryn Murman and Jenna Ushkowitz.

The young cast members, many of whom will vote for the first time in the upcoming 2008 Presidential election, are encouraging young people to register and make their voices heard. The PSA can be viewed at RocktheVote.com.

Founded almost 20 years ago, Rock the Vote is an intersection of politics, pop culture and the youth of America. Rock the Vote works with artists to grab the attention of young people, and engage them in building a political movement to fight for young people and the issues that affect their lives.

Based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening won eight 2007 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Spring Awakening features direction by Michael Mayer, choreography by Bill T. Jones, book and lyrics by Steven Sater and a score by Duncan Sheik.

Spring Awakening's cast album earned a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.

The musical about teenagers struggling with parental, social, academic and sexual pressures made its world premiere Off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company in June 2006. Spring Awakening transferred to Broadway the following November, where it continues to play at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre.
