A Senator, a Mobster and a Party Girl Populate Premiere of Mastrosimone's Dirty Business in FL

By Kenneth Jones
01 Oct 2008

Florida Stage, the South Florida Equity troupe devoted to contemporary writers, will present the world premiere of William Mastrosimone's Dirty Business Oct. 22-Nov. 30.

"Based on actual events," according to Florida Stage notes, "Dirty Business tells the story of a young Senator from Massachusetts named Jack who is running for President, a mob boss named Sam and a party girl called Judy and the sticky web that is woven between them. This is an American story of sex, politics and the mob and written by an Emmy Award-winning playwright."

Louis Tyrrell, producing director of Florida Stage, directs Dirty Business, which will feature James Lloyd Reynolds as Jack, the young Senator from Massachusetts; Jack Gwaltney as the smooth womanizer-crooner Frank; Gordon McConnell as a Mafia capo named Sam; Elizabeth Davis as party girl Judy.

Dirty Business opens Oct. 24, launching the Manalapan, FL, company's 22nd season.

Mastrosimone penned The Woolgatherer, Extremities, Benedict Arnold, With Honors, Nanawatai (which became a feature film called "The Beast"), Shivaree and The Burning Season.

Mastrosimone won a Golden Globe in 1992 for his mini-series, "Sinatra." His play Bang Bang You're Dead (produced at Florida Stage), is a royalty-free play for high schools which inspired the Showtime movie of the same name and won five Emmys and The Peabody Award. He created, was head writer for, and co-produced "Into the West" (TNT and BBC) for Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks; the show was nominated for a Golden Globe and 16 Emmys. His play The Afghan Women received its world premiere in Kabul, Afghanistan and is available as a fund-raiser to benefit Afghan orphans through International Orphan Care, on whose board he serves as an adviser.

For ticket information, call (561) 585-3433 or (800) 514-3837 (outside of Palm Beach County) or visit www.floridastage.org.

Florida Stage bills itself as "among the largest professional theatre companies in the state of Florida and the only professional theatre in the Southeast of the U.S. that produces exclusively new and emerging plays and playwrights."

In addition to its five-show season, Florida Stage will also produce a summer musical, the third annual 1st Stage New Works Festival (March 8-10, 2009), its annual Young Playwrights and Monologue Festival.
