Prior to Public, Hoch's Taking Over Plays Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn — for Free

Hip-Hop theatre innovator Danny Hoch begins free performances of his latest work, Taking Over, in a tour to venues in three New York City boroughs starting Oct. 1. The All City Tour starts in the Bronx.

A co-presentation with the Public Theater and the Hip-Hop Theater Festival, Taking Over will be offered free throughout New York City prior to making its official bow at the Public in Manhattan on Nov. 7.

Under the direction of Tony Taccone (Carrie Fisher's Wishful Drinking), Taking Over begins its tour Oct. 1-4 at the Hostos Center for Arts and Culture in the Bronx. The production then moves to LaGuardia Performing Arts Center in Queens Oct. 6-10, and concludes Oct. 11 at Grand Street Campus Auditorium in Brooklyn.

Reservations for free performances of Taking Over: The All City Tour are available by visiting HHTF.

Following the tour, Taking Over plays the Public Theater Nov. 7-Dec. 14. An official opening night has been set for Nov. 23.

"Danny Hoch is more than a brilliant performer; he is a moral beacon, an explosive ethicist, the heart of everything that's great about New York," said Public Theater artistic director Oskar Eustis in a statement. "It's fantastic to have him back at The Public."

Press notes for Taking Over state, "Blazing through a fierce spectrum of New Yorkers, Hoch gives voice to everyone from the developers evicting locals to make way for lofts, to the bar-hopping career hipsters who buy them, and those left in the wake of both. True to Hoch's signature style, Taking Over is a raw, explosive, hilarious and heartbreaking study of the impact of our obsession with economic expansion."

The creative team includes costume and scenic designer Annie Smart, lighting and projection designer Alex Nichols and sound designer Walter Trarbach.

Tickets for the Public Theater engagement of Taking Over go on sale Oct. 19. For tickets visit PublicTheater.

The Public Theater is located at 425 Lafayette Street in Manhattan.

Hoch is the founder of the Hip-Hop Theater Festival, now in its eighth year, which continues annually nationwide and has seen his Obie-winning Jails, Hospitals & Hip-Hop adapted for film.

In addition to his stage work, Hoch's HBO special "Some People" earned him a Cable Ace Award. Hoch has also appeared in the films "Bamboozled," "Subway Stories," "Thin Red Line," "Blackhawk Down," "American Splendor," "War of The Worlds" and the upcoming "Lucky You" and "We Own The Night." Hoch is currently writing a full length Hip-Hop musical entitled A Word Is Born.
