Olivier nominee Michael Sheen has joined the cast of director Tim Burton's film remake of the classic Lewis Carroll tale "Alice in Wonderland."

Sheen will co-star in the Burton film opposite Johnny Depp, who is set to portray the Mad Hatter, according to Variety. Depp, a staple of Burton's films, earned an Oscar nomination for the director's film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's Sweeney Todd. Sheen's role in "Alice" has not been revealed.

In addition to "Alice in Wonderland," Sheen is set to appear in the upcoming thriller "Unthinkable." Samuel L. Jackson also appears in that film, which questions the ethics of torture following a terrorist threat on U.S. soil. Gregor Jordan directs the screenplay that will begin filming later this month.

Variety also reports that Sheen, a favorite of screenwriter Peter Morgan, may not be done with his portrayal of former British prime minister Tony Blair. Morgan has penned "The Special Relationship," which depicts Blair's relationships with presidents Clinton and George W. Bush.

Sheen has appeared in the Broadway productions of Amadeus and as television interviewer David Frost in Peter Morgan's Frost/Nixon, a role he originated in the West End and repeated for the forthcoming Ron Howard film adaptation. Sheen's screen appearances also include "The Queen," "Blood Diamond," "Music Within," "Kingdom of Heaven" and "Laws of Attraction."
