Girl's Room, with McKechnie and Lawrence, Makes West Coast Premiere Oct. 8

Broadway veterans Donna McKechnie and Carol Lawrence star in the West Coast premiere of Girl's Room, which begins previews at the El Portal Theatre Oct. 8.

Directed by Lynne Taylor-Corbett, the production will officially open at the North Hollywood, CA, venue Oct. 11 and play a limited run through Nov. 2. Rebecca Mae Palmer co-stars.

McKechnie and Lawrence were previously seen in Girl's Room at Queens Theatre in the Park.

Joni Fritz's comedy, according to press notes, concerns "three generations of lively women and the lies that bind them together as well as the truths that tear them apart. [Palmer is] the third generation young ballet dancer about to break into the big-time who has another kind of break – an accident that could end her career."

Dennis Grimaldi Productions in association with Queens Theatre in the Park is presenting the California run. In a previous statement producer Grimaldi said, "What attracted me to Girl's Room and why I developed the show with the author is that it dealt with a world I am very familiar, having been a former dancer myself. The fun is that including myself, I have a director, who was a former dancer, two stars who were dancers, an author who was a dancer, a Production Stage Manager who was a dancer with ABT and Harkness, and a set designer who's married to a dancer. Lots of 'Six Degrees.'"

The production features scenic design by Beowulf Boritt, costume design by Jennifer Caprio and lighting design by Jason Kantrowitz.

Show times are Wednesdays at 2 PM, Thursdays-Saturdays at 8 PM and Saturdays and Sundays at 3 PM.

The El Portal Theatre Mainstage is located at 5269 Lankershim Blvd. in North Hollywood, CA. Tickets, priced $40-$60, are available by calling (818) 508-4200 or by visiting elportaltheatre.com.
