LAST CHANCE: [title of show], Morton, Beast, Lady and More

By Adam Hetrick
07 Oct 2008

The little musical that could, an Off-Broadway hunting trip, two Iraqi War veterans and an original member of Broadway's most volatile family exit the New York stage.

What follows is Playbill.com's weekly "Last Chance" reminder to catch Broadway and Off-Broadway productions before they close.

Concluding Oct. 11

  • Lady (Off-Broadway at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater). The world premiere of Craig Wright's drama about three childhood friends on a hunting trip who discover later in life that their conflicting political attitudes may tear at their history stars Michael Shannon, Paul Sparks and David Wilson Barnes. For tickets, visit Rattlestick.

  • Hip-Hop Theatre Festival. The three-week festival boasts free performances of Danny Hoch's Taking Over as well as Marc Bamuthi Joseph's the break/s, Howard Zinn and Anthony Arnove's Voices: A People's History of the United States as well as numerous workshops, readings and panel discussions highlighting hip-hop theatre. For tickets and information visit HHTF.

    Concluding Oct. 12

    Morton

  • Amy Morton August: Osage County (Broadway at the Music Box Theatre). Tony-nominated Steppenwolf Ensemble member Amy Morton gives her last performance as eldest sister Barbara in Tracy Letts' Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning family drama August: Osage County. After originating the role in Chicago and on Broadway, Morton and her fellow original cast members are preparing to make their London debuts in the darkly comic drama at the National Theatre beginning Nov. 21. Cast member Jim True-Frost, who took over the role of Little Charles on June 17, also exits the Broadway production Oct. 12. (The production continues on Broadway with Johanna Day, Michael Milligan and Estelle Parsons, among others). For tickets, visit AugustonBroadway.

  • [title of show] (Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre). The meta-musical gives audiences a sassy insider's look at creating a Broadway musical as two writers and their two friends set out to do just that. Armed with a blank sheet of paper, a keyboard, a turkey burger and a plethora of pop-culture and musical flop references, creators and cast members Jeff Bowen, Hunter Bell, Susan Blackwell and Heidi Blickenstaff discovered that in the end they could be "Part of It All."

  • Beast (Off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop). Jo Bonney directs Dan Butler, Logan Marshall-Green and Corey Stoll in the blood-red comic road adventure about two fiercely patriotic Iraqi War veterans who embark on a cross-country trip to offer some advice to the Commander in Chief at his Crawford, TX, ranch. For tickets, visit Telecharge.

  • Close Ties (Off-Broadway at the Ensemble Studio Theatre). Pamela Berlin directs Elizabeth Diggs' story of three generations of the Frye family who gather at their vacation home in the Berkshires to find that the family's center, their aging grandmother, can no longer hold everything together. For tickets visit EnsembleStudioTheatre.
