St. Ann's Season Kicks Off Oct. 9 with Return of Black Watch

By Adam Hetrick
09 Oct 2008

The return engagement of the National Theatre of Scotland's Black Watch launches the 2008-2009 season at St. Ann's Warehouse Oct. 9.

Black Watch, which earned critical and audience praise during its numerous international engagements, returns to St. Ann's following a sold-out extended engagement last fall. The return presentation, which is already selling out performances, continues through Nov. 30.

National Theatre of Scotland's executive producer Neil Murray said in a statement, "The run of Black Watch at St. Ann's in 2007 was one of the great thrills of the short life of the National Theatre of Scotland. So many people wanted to see it but couldn't be accommodated, it felt like unfinished business. It is wonderful to have the opportunity to return to this dynamic space and continue the dialogue that this show generates and demands."

Created from personal testimonies of Scotland's legendary army regiment, the ten-member docudrama incorporates military drills, song, video and historical sequences to reveal an up-close account of the Iraq war. Black Watch is penned by Gregory Burke and directed by John Tiffany.

The physical production necessitates a large playing area in order to represent an esplanade with the audience seated on either side of the action. St. Ann's marks one of the smallest venues the production has played; however, it makes an ideal space as it provides audiences with a closer encounter of the gripping work.

St. Ann's will offer $20 rush tickets, some of which may be partial or obstructed view, one hour prior to each performance.

Tickets for Black Watch are currently available by phoning (718) 254-8779 or online at artsatstanns.org.

St. Ann's Warehouse is located at 38 Water Street (between Main and Dock St.) in Brooklyn, New York.
