Culture Project's The Atheist Opens at the Barrow Street Theatre Oct. 12

A political scandal is the focus of the Culture Project's production of The Atheist, which officially opens Off-Broadway Oct. 12 starring Campbell Scott.

Scott appears as the ruthless reporter Augustine Early in the solo play by Ronan Noone. Circle in the Square Theatre co-produces the engagement, which began performances Oct. 7 and runs in repertory with Culture Project's In Conflict.

In The Atheist, press notes state, "Scott plays 'Augustine Early,' a crooked reporter who will do anything to get his next front-page story. When Augustine turns a prominent local politician's tawdry predilections into front-page news, the scandal threatens to undo the one person Augustine thought was immune - himself."

The design team comprises Ben Stanton (lighting design), Cristina Todesco (set design) and Alex Neumann (sound design). Emily Ellen Roberts is the stage manager.

Scott has appeared onstage in Ah, Wilderness!; The Real Thing; and the Huntington's 1996 production of Hamlet. Recently seen in the television series "Six Degrees," the actor is also known for his film turns in "The Dying Gaul," "The Secret Lives of Dentists," "Dying Young," "Singles," "Roger Dodger" and "Marie and Bruce."

The Atheist was previously seen at both the Huntington Theatre and the Williamstown Theatre Festival. The work was also presented for a sold-out special event at the Culture Project last May.

The Barrow Street Theatre is located in the West Village at 27 Barrow Street at 7th Avenue South. For more tickets and more information visit www.cultureproject.org.
