Ruehl and Rabe to Star in Broadway Premiere of Greenberg's American Plan

| photo by Aubrey Reuben | Oscar and Tony Award winner Mercedes Ruehl and Drama Desk nominee Lily Rabe will head the cast of Richard Greenberg's The American Plan, which will begin previews at Broadway's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre Jan. 2, 2009.
Directed by Tony nominee David Grindley (Journey's End), the Manhattan Theatre Club production will officially open Jan. 22. Additional casting will be announced shortly.
"It is the Catskill Mountains in the early 1960s," according to The American Plan press notes, "and Lily Adler (Rabe) and her mother Eva (Ruehl) are spending the summer across the lake from a bustling hotel where comics entertain and buffets overflow. When a handsome young stranger enters their world, the emotionally fragile Lily finds herself falling in love. But once her imperious mother learns of their relationship, lies are exposed, alliances are forged and Lily's one chance to escape her mother's control may be lost forever."
The creative team comprises Jonathan Fensom (scenic and costume design), Mark McCullough (lighting design) and Darron L. West and Bray Poor (sound design).
Mercedes Ruehl was most recently on Broadway in 2002 in Edward Albee's The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? She was recently seen Off-Broadway in Albee's The Occupant. In 1991 Ruehl received an Oscar and Golden Globe awards for her work in "The Fisher King" and Tony and Drama Desk awards for her performance in Neil Simon's Lost in Yonkers. Other films include "Warriors," "Big," "Heartburn," "Slaves of New York," "Another You," "Last Action Hero," "Lost in Yonkers," "What's Cooking," "The Amati Girls," "For Rosanna" and "The Minus Man."
Lily Rabe was seen last season in the Broadway revival of Heartbreak House for which she received an Outer Critics Circle nomination. She made her Broadway debut in 2005 in the revival of Steel Magnolias (Drama Desk nomination). Rabe's screen credits include "All Good Things," "Aftermath," "What Just Happened," "The Toe Tactic," "No Reservations," "A Crime," "Mona Lisa Smile," "Never Again," "Nip/Tuck," "Medium," "Law and Order: CI" and "Law Order: SVU."
Richard Greenberg is the author of Take Me Out, which won the 2003 Tony Award for Best Play. His other plays include Eastern Standard, Dance of Death, The Violet Hour, Three Days of Rain and A Naked Girl on the Appian Way. Greenberg also penned the new book for the upcoming Broadway revival of Pal Joey.
