Russell, Hytner and Friedman Will Join Shenton in Spotlight On Series at the Shaw

By Andrew Gans
14 Oct 2008

Maria Friedman

Playwright and composer Willy Russell, director Nicholas Hytner and musical theatre star Maria Friedman will be the latest artists featured in the Spotlight On... series at London's Shaw Theatre.

This latest round of talk in the series, which was devised by Neil Marcus and Elaine Paige, will be hosted by Playbill.com London correspondent Mark Shenton, who is also a theatre critic for the Sunday Express and regularly hosts platforms at the National Theatre.

Russell, who wrote the Olivier Award-winning musical Blood Brothers, now in its 21st West End year at the Phoenix Theatre, will appear Oct. 20 at 8 PM. His other credits include Educating Rita (originally produced by the RSC at the Donmar Warehouse, and subsequently re-created on film) and Shirley Valentine (West End, Broadway and film).

Hytner, who is director of the National Theatre, will appear Nov. 21 at 3 PM to discuss his productions of Miss Saigon and Carousel, among others. He has also directed Alan Bennett's The Madness of King George III and The History Boys on both stage and screen, as well as His Dark Materials on stage.

Friedman, who was most recently seen onstage in a run of her one-woman concert Maria Friedman: Re-Arranged at the Menier Chocolate Factory, will appear Dec. 2 at 8 PM. She won Olivier Awards for her roles in Passion, Ragtime and the earlier version of her concert show, By Special Arrangement. Other leading roles include appearances in the West End in Chicago, Blues in the Night and The Woman in White (subsequently re-creating her performance at Broadway's Marquis Theatre), as well as Lady in the Dark and Sunday in the Park with George, both at the National Theatre. Producer Neil Marcus will be presenting a season entitled Maria Friedman Celebrates the British Songbook at the Shaw Theatre in February 2009.

Future guests lined up for the season include composers Michel Legrand and Claude-Michel Schönberg, for which dates are yet to be announced.
